Balloon Frenzy!

This morning I started out tutoring thinking I’d only have Paul. He’s become my regular, every day guy, but then about 20 minutes into the tutoring session Dalitso and Gertrude came. It’s been so long since they’ve both come! I had printed out some worksheets for them; one on alphabetization, one on filling in the correct verb tense, one paragraph corrections and one word search. They seemed to enjoy them. For Paul I continued doing letters and letter sounds. He seemed more tired and less motivated today than he usually is. He still did well though—he is a very smart kid.
After tutoring the kids never want to leave. We ended up goofing around with Paul, Given, Obey and Stone for a good ½ hour after they were supposed to “go home”. They can’t get enough of the cameras and taking pictures so it was like a never ending photo shoot. They also are fascinated with the alarm clock I use to keep track of time and love pushing the button that makes the light turn on. They are just so cute…we love them so much that we can’t ever force them to go home.

Our ladies weren’t showing up when we were expecting them either. Finally Regina came at about 9:45 and said the other ladies were at a funeral. So she was our only student today. We decided to scrap what we had planned since we only had Regina and we sat outside on the Moyo’s porch for “class”. We basically just had conversation time and did a couple extra worksheets we had in our pile of stuff. We had a worksheet on analogies, pronouns and verb tenses. Then we chatted about culture and family etc.

After Regina’s private English class we took some more sweet pictures of the boys and little Miriam and then headed home.
For lunch we had avocado and fried egg sandwiches and worked on creating all the English and tutoring certificates.

At 1 we went back for afternoon tutoring. The boys, G, P, O, S, were still there! Every day they surprise me with how eager they are to learn and how they are just such good boys. We sat on the porch doing flashcards for a while before my tutees showed up. Both Shadreck and Pimbi came today        and pretty much on time, or at least better than usual. J

After tutoring we came home and finished printing the certificates. We accomplish a nice big project to cross off our list. A little before 4 we went back to campus to deliver some eggs and empty grocery bags to Anne and to pass out balloons to the kids. The balloons were leftover from Mrs. Sargent’s party last night. We had 2 huge garbage bags full. The kids were so excited to get a balloon each. They were shouting and cheering and just so happy. Unfortunately, being outside, they popped quite easily and we didn’t have enough to give everyone a second one. So the little kids were very sad and kept begging for another one. I told them the rest were for the older kids playing kickball. When the bigger kids finished their game of kickball, Erika went over to get the rest of the balloons from the guest house. The kids swarmed around her chanting for balloons and getting so excited! It was like a feeding frenzy only they weren’t getting food. It was quite a sight to see even 12 and 13 year old kids get so excited over one balloon.

After the balloon frenzy we headed over to Birners. Mrs. Birner had invited us over, along with Prof. Cherney, for leftover tacos. They were so delicious, again!

When we got home we head some strange yelling and commotion outside our gate on the road. It was kind of creepy and we’ve never heard any loud yelling like that before. We have no idea what it was all about, but it stopped before too long.
A couple episodes of Friends finished off our night.
